Many people, surprisingly, do not know that the cold sore virus can only infect someone once. However outbreaks of the disease may occur throughout your life, unless you take proper precautions. Technically you are infected once by the cold sore virus. Thereafter the virus goes into remission and never exits from the body. Its manifestation disappears from the infected part of the body, after undergoing "treatment" or waiting for the body to deal with the outbreak on its own.

Many people have suffered from cold sores from one time or another. The virus that causes the disease is known as herpes simplex type 1. Cold sores are very contagious. The blisters form in the upper part of the body, mainly the facial area. There are two types of the virus. A closely related virus infects the lower parts of the body i.e. below the waistline. This type is known as herpes simplex type 2 virus. For herpes simplex type 1, blisters are known to occur on the face, nostrils, lips, neck, ear, etc.

The disfiguration caused by blisters is of great concern to many people in addition to the pain they cause. After healing, the blisters may reoccur again and again.

Scientists say the virus actually hides in nerve cells! After a while, the disease may be triggered again when conditions are conducive. This is actually the same old infection having an outbreak.

Without any other intervention, a cold sore can take up to fourteen days to heal on its own for most people.

There are cures which make the visible blisters dormant faster. Any infected person should seek medical attention at the earliest opportunity. It is very important to learn the basic nature and structure of the virus to combat it effectively from inside and outside of the human body.

Over the coutner drugs and regular medical prescriptions are popular with some people. This is not recommended. Sometimes viruses can become immune to medical drugs whenover-used. The drugs also have some other side effects. Here are a few tips on how you can stop cold sore infections and even the possibility of the virus triggering outbreaks in the future.

To start with, you should avoid using the same toothbrush that you were using during the outbreak. You should get a new one.e. after they go into remission.

Secondly, you should maintain good personal hygiene. It is advisable to always wash hands after greeting people. Many germs and viruses can be passed on from one person to another through the shaking of hands. It is not easy to tell whether someone is infected by such a virus or not.

Thirdly, whenever possible avoid sharing towels with others. It is better to use disposable tissue. It is hard to tell. Cups, cutlery and other utensils should be washed well after use to reduce the possibility of propagating infections.

Fourthly, whenever possible, you should avoid extreme temperature changes. Those who want to enjoy the sun should use sunscreens e.g. SPF15 before going out into the hot sun. Cold weather can also have disastrous effects. You should wear proper clothing to avoid exposure to cold weather.

Lastly, avoid unnecessary physical contact with infected people. You should avoid crowded places. You should also desist from kissing anyone who is or has recently suffered from cold sores.

These are precautions and preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of being infected by the cold sore virus or if you are already infected to reduce the likelihood of outbreaks. These guidelines will also help you to be a more caring human being by reducing the likelihood of spreading infections to other people.
